BBC services on medium wave and short wave to listeners in the country remain unaffected. The suspension follows a recently ratified Tajik Media Law that requires the BBC to register with the Tajik Ministry of Justice and acquire a media license. However, although the BBC has started the process of registration, the deadline set would not enable the BBC to complete this complex process. Andres Ilves, Head of Persian and Pashto Service, BBC World service: "The BBC has made a huge impact amongst listeners in Tajikistan. We are anxious to be permitted to broadcast our programmes on FM again as soon as possible." The BBC has been broadcasting in Tajikistan since 1996 on MW. In 2004 the BBC launched two 24-hour FM relays, in Dushanbe and Khojand, with programmes in Tajik, Persian, Russian and English.
